Client: Crawley Borough Council
Creative Partner: Creative Crawley
Traffic Management: Safe TM Services
As part of Crawley Borough Council’s ongoing placemaking strategy and in collaboration with Creative Crawley, a striking new mural has been unveiled on the Hazelwick Flyover—one of the town’s key gateways. Titled “The Place That Does It All”, the mural celebrates Crawley’s diverse and industrious spirit and now welcomes commuters and residents alike as they pass through the Manor Royal Business District.
Safe TM Services were proud to provide the complete traffic management solution for this unique urban art installation, helping to safely deliver a creative and community-focused transformation of this vital transport link.
Our Role
This project posed a distinct set of traffic management challenges due to the need to maintain traffic flow on a key arterial route, while providing a safe working environment for artists and contractors working at height along the flyover.
Our contributions included:
- Designing detailed Traffic Management Plans and diversion strategies
- Deploying lane closures with timing aligned to low-traffic periods
- Installing bespoke signage, including advanced warning for motorists
- Supplying and managing traffic control equipment and barriers
- Staffing the project with experienced TM operatives for continuous safety monitoring
Safety, Creativity & Community
The mural work was carried out directly on the concrete flyover, requiring close collaboration with Creative Crawley and the artists from Orakel Workshop. Our team ensured the area was secure for the muralists to work undisturbed, while still allowing traffic to flow through Crawley with minimal disruption.
By phasing closures and positioning signage strategically, we were able to:
- Ensure zero harm to the public and contractors
- Avoid peak-hour delays
- Support the project’s community engagement goals by making the site feel open and accessible, rather than heavily restricted
A Gateway with Impact
The completed mural has already made a strong visual impact, completing a trilogy of flyover artworks across Crawley and reinforcing the town’s identity as a forward-thinking, vibrant place to live and work.
We’re proud to have helped bring this creative vision to life—safely, smoothly, and with minimal disruption.
